Happy Mother's Day

Celebrations of mothers traces back to the annual spring festival the Greeks dedicated to Rhea, the mother of many deities, and to the offerings ancient Romans made to their Great Mother of Gods, Cybele. Christians celebrated this festival on the fourth Sunday in Lent in honor of Mary, mother of Christ. In England this holiday was expanded to include all mothers and was called Mothering Sunday.

Mother's Day  was proclaimed in 1870 by  Julia Ward Howe (a Boston poet, pacifist, suffragist, and author of the lyrics to the "Battle Hymn of the Republic,"), but was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother in America. She then began a campaign to make Mother's Day a recognized holiday in the United States. Although she was successful in 1914, she was already disappointed with its commercialization by the 1920s. Jarvis' holiday was adopted by other countries and it is now celebrated all over the world. In 1912, Anna Jarvis trademarked the phrases "second Sunday in May" and "Mother's Day", and created the Mother's Day International Association.
Happy Mother's Day !!!
